Is DIY right for you?

Some things you should consider before deciding if you should design your own wedding flowers or hire a professional florist...

  • GENERAL

  • Do you have allergies or skin sensitivities?  You may not want to run the risk of an breakout on your wedding day.

  • Do you have 6-8 hours the day before the wedding to work on making the floral arrangements?  Have you figured out how long it will take you to make everything?

    DESIGNS & TIMING

  • Are you comfortable working with flowers? Do you have experience, especially experience making more than one item at a time?

  • Do you have a specific design in mind? If so, have you practiced it? If not, are you OK with the final design not matching your expectations exactly?

  • Do you know how long it will take for each type of flower to open to the correct stage? Have you planned enough time between picking up your flowers and designing so that they will be in the correct state? (Not too open, not too closed.)

  • MATERIALS & WORKSPACE

  • Do you have time to gather all the vases before the event? What will you do with all those matching vases after the wedding?

  • Have you purchased all the supplies needed? (Buckets, knives, snips, wires, ribbons, floral tape, etc. etc. etc.)

  • Do you have a good place to store the flowers, both after you pick them up and while you work on them? (Cool & dark; not freezing, not too warm; away from children and pets; no strong breezes from the AC or heater, etc.)

  • Do you have a good place to work?  This may include storage space, work tables and easy access to water.

  • HELPERS & ASSISTANTS

  • Do you have friends or family to help if this DIY projects gets to be too much?

  • Do you have someone to set up centerpieces and ceremony arrangements the day of the wedding? (YOU will probably be getting ready and taking photos.)

  • Do you have someone to distribute and attach boutonnieres and corsages to the correct recipients? Does that person know HOW to attach boutonnieres and corsages?

  • Do you have someone (or several someones) lined up to clean up and take away all the flowers and decor after the event?
