The Evolution of Wedding Flowers: Pastels & Neutrals

Photos by: Rose of Sharon and The Photo Love

Every few years I have the privilege of designing for multiple weddings within the same family. Not only do I love celebrating these special moments with my clients and getting to know them over the years, I’ve realized that reflecting on their events is the perfect way to assess the Evolution of Wedding Flowers! Enter our new blog series, stage left.

The Henry Sisters—Andria, Alyssa, and Karah have all been married within the past 15 years and they all had pastel and neutral flowers as a focal point, but in their own way and reflecting the trends of their wedding time. Let’s dive into the details and see which wedding fits your vibe the most.

Andria was married on the fall of 2011 and she chose a pastel color palette. Think green hyndrangeas, peach roses, blush carnations, Cafe au Late Dahlias and cream Queen Anne’s Lace. At the time, soft pastels were popular wedding flower colors and I loved the freshness of the peach and green combination Andria chose.

My favorite part of her event is that we did private bouquet making class for her bridesmaids wherein I taught them all how to design and they made their own bouquets! Andria picked the flowers so that the bouquets were cohesive but each bridesmaid was able to customize the mix for their style. It was so fun and special and something I am now offering again as an add-on experience.

Alyssa was married in the spring of 2021 at Stone Chapel at MattLane Farm. She chose a white & green palette which has always been popular and classic with my clients, but a fluffy, delicate flower style started coming into fashion during this time period. Many-petaled ranunculus and delicate scabiosa were front and center in her bouquet while lush green Italian Ruscus and fluffy stock shone in her centerpieces.

Finally, Karah was married in the spring of 2023 at Chapel on The Creeks. For her colors she chose the best of both worlds from her sister’s weddings, but made it completely her own. This year, a toffee/cappuccino colored rose has been very popular. For her bouquet, we used a mix of ‘Toffee’ standard roses and ‘Sahara Sensation’ (a latte color) spray roses to bring that warm feeling she was looking for. The finishing touches were a pop of white ranunculus, beautiful green foliage, and dried floral accents like cute bunny tails. (Kaity of The Photo Love photographed her beautiful day.)

In summary, color and flower trends change, but the fact remains the same that all flowers are beautiful and make your wedding day all the more special! You can’t go wrong with any color or flower, as long as it feels true to you. Happy flowering!
